Troy and I left my place at noon and picked up Jacob JakeE at the carpool lot in Ann Arbor around 12:30. The drive into Ohio and to Dayton was largely uneventful, with a quick stop at a rest area and a couple nasty construction zones.

We checked into our AirBB and had an hour or so to chill out before heading to the gig. I got a nice, quiet room in the back of the lower level of a duplex house on the eastern side of town, a short couple miles to the Oregon District, where the show was.

We loaded into Blind Bob's early and got rock star parking out front, as usual. The food there is awesome. We got the hoola hoops appetizers, which are deep fried pineapples sprinkled with powdered sugar and a creamy, sweet cinnamon sauce on the side. JakeE ordered the chili-sauce fried cauliflower which was a great compliment. We scarfed down half of our sandwiches and wraps with waffles fries, saved the rest of later, and put the leftovers in the van.

I headed a couple doors down to check out one of my fav vintage shops, hoping to score a cow’s skull necklace to replace the one that that I got there a couple years ago then promptly lost that night at the show, but they didn’t have any. Apparently the guy who makes them works out of his basement in the mountains of California and they are hard to get and don’t last long when the do come in. Oh well, the search continues. I thumbed through the new arrivals at Omega Music, asked about the new UltraBomb! record (didn’t have but could order), and headed back to the bar.

San Fransisco Zodiacs went on right around 9pm and played a great, tight set of original punk/pop-punk stuff that was better than I’ve heard in some time. My fav song was a new one that reminded me of Jawbreaker. Our friends from The Strains, Jamy, Gretta, and Paul all showed up, 2/3 from Dayton, and we were lucky to catch them in town, and it was great to get caught up and shared war stories.

We went on at 10 to a small but respectable enough audience that was engaged and attentive and that’s about all we ever ask for. We played our asses off and did pretty well, including some newer stuff we’ve never played before.

After the show we chatted with the Zodiacs and The Strains, took some photos, had a nightcap, loaded out, and headed back to the AirBB. I took the wheel, having taken it easy all night, and got us back safe and sound, for a nightcap and some post-game analysis.

Today we’re staring down a 7-8 hour drive from Dayton to Dubuque so it was up and at `em this morning and out the door at 7:45am. We met Gretta and Paul at the Hasty Tasty Pancake HouseP and talked shop over coffees and eggs. The Hasty has become a tradition and Jake’s leading the charge there whenever we’re in Dayton.

We’re now barreling down I-70 towards Indiana with Troy at the wheel, me riding shotgun, and JakeE in the back. Sorry for any typos, but this isn't easy! Thanks for the hospitality, Dayton! See y’all at The Lift in Dubuque, Iowa, Our first show there since the before times. Looking forward to playing with Sparrowhawk on the banks of the Mississippi! xx
