Raleigh, North Carolina

We left the horse farm in the hills of south North Carolina around noon, with bellies full of sausage gravy and biscuits and eggs from our amazing host Deena. We had the best night of sleep we’ve had in a few and after breakfast and a healthy dose of French-press coffee we were ready to roll. We looped south back into South Carolina then back north into NC and up through Charlotte.

We stopped at a Sheetz for gas and their Icees weren’t friggin’ Icees at all, just watery slush, and in my efforts to find a flavor that was actually frozen, I tried the orange cream, which yuk anyway, and it projectile sprayed all over my hand and arm. That made me grumpy and I may have said a bad word. I calmed down and opted for the make-your-own milkshake and got a chocolate-caramel-Rese’s one and it was awesome but I was still agitated and would remain so for a while.

First stop in Raleigh was at Adam’s friend’s house Michael, who we are crashing with. I saw a photo of him with my pals from Minneapolis Luke and Lewis from The Right Here and it turns out I have a little history with him too from a few years back, so that was a crazy small world coincidences. Unfortunately, we had little time for socializing and had to get to the bar.

We loaded into The Pour House Music Hall and set up our gear. It's a great room with a balcony, a nice green room, and great sound. The sound guy Jac was a bit salty (in the most loving way), as sound engineers often are, but they’re all great people and he was cool and amazing at his job. He had us dialed in quickly and it was time for a drink and some hangs. My pal Jer set the show up and plays in Karbuncle with David so it was great to get caught up with them and his girlfriend Shelly.

The dudes in Hank Sinatra were all super nice and went on first to a decent-for-a-Wednesday night crowd and played a great set. They wrapped up with Skynyrd’s “Saturday Night Special” and it might have been the best Skynyrd cover I’ve heard (tho Cheap Trick “Gimme Back My Bullets” isn’t bad). We went up second and had a great, rowdy set despite some technical issues (Tommy broke a string) and all felt good about the show. Karbuncle played after us and was even better than I’d remembered when we played together in 2023. Great sort of difficult to label swampy-at-times indie blues rock with economic arrangements and great guitar tones and pounding drums, with a heavy foot on the kick.

After the show we loaded out and headed around the corner to a bar that might have been The Bridge? I’m honestly not sure on the count of not paying attention, and you know. Adam had fallen behind (distracted on a phone call) and Jack wanted to go back towards the venue to check on him. I said I was sure he’d be fine, not really wanting to take that walk, but like Snow and Cowboy going back to check on Ajax while Swan headed toward Union Station, we did the right thing and went back and fetched him. He was fine, of course, blissfully unaware of our heroic efforts.

Half the gang from the Pour House was partying with us at the pub, but after one, or maybe two, we’ll see, we headed back to Michael’s house where there was more whiskey, pinball, and leftover barbecue from South Carolina.

It was a really fun night and we’re grateful to the Pour House, everyone who came out on a Wednesday, and to Karbuncle and Hank Sinatra and all their awesome friends.

Today we’re off to Washington, DC where we’ll play Haydee's Restaurant with the great Don Zientara opening. I haven’t played DC in 12 years and 3 days so should be a fun one. Just 3 shows left. Crazy. Xx
