High Springs, Florida
Saturday was a rare day of downtime and chilling on the property we’re staying at near High Springs. There was lots of coffee drank and rotating conversations on different porches. I restrung my guitar for the first time in one-gig-too-many, and Tommy and I did a little picking on the porch of his cabin before I meandered back to mine for a little phone time. I called TrooperGirl22 and we finally had a little time to get caught up. She’s holding her own, doing projects around the house and getting into some trouble with her girlfriends.
Around 3pm we all got in the van and headed into town and grabbed our meal-of-the-day at El Patio. I got the Burritos Carne Asada and it was surprisingly really great. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food, some chasing it with a Modelo. I dragged Kernel over to the corner of the restaurant where there was a life-size statue of a saddled horse. I wanted him to mount the great beast (like, get in the saddle, ya sickos) for a surefire amazing photo-op but the hostess advised against it, as it’s apparently not for that kind of thing, despite appearances and the easily accessible stirrups.
Next we put Salt N Pepa “Push It” on repeat and it would stay that way for the rest of the night and it’s still that way today. Congrats to SNP for their induction into the Rock Hall of Fame last night. Don’t get me started on that topic. went down some back roads to go see the High Springs (I assume, or some springs) at a nearby state park. We dropped our $6 in the DIY till and found parking, only to learn that it was just the picnic area and volleyball court that was open. Park rangers told us so. Jack and I put on our bestest friendly-tourist faces and asked for a few minutes just to check out the spring, but Smoky Bear wasn’t having it. We weren’t up for a fight or a game of volleyball so we left the park, dejected and out six bucks. Showtime was approaching so we made a quick stop at Winn-Dixie for some motel whiskey and other provisions and headed back to Mike and Terry’s to change and head out.
Night 2 at the High Springs Brewing Company was a bit less crowded than night 1, but still plenty well attended, and a lot easier for us as our gear was ready to go and we weren’t coming off an 8-hour drive from Chattanooga. We mixed up the set-list quite a bit but followed the same formula of me starting with a couple solo songs, then Adam joins for a couple, then the rest of The Wild Honey Collective come up and we tear through a set of my songs. I’ll then leave the stage to them for about an hour, then after a short break we rip through some stuff together and call it a night. We met some great people, sold some merch, had a couple pints of their fantastic beer, loaded out and headed out. We had a blast at the HSBC and want to thank Chris, the great staff, and everyone who came out to watch us in this cool little town.
We stopped for a nightcap (the first of several) at the The Santa Fe Bar between town and Mike and Terry’s house. We were hoping for a rowdy honkytonk or roadhouse or something on the count of all the cars out front and general appearance of the joint, but it was actually pretty tame, with a guitar-bass duo playing modern country and some folks playing cornhole on the patio. We left after one and headed back to M&T’s, nearly hitting a not-too-bright armadillo down the back road to their place. I’ve seen countless roadkill armadillos down south, but I think that was my first live one. I was about to get out and play with it when it finally moseyed off into the night.
We met in the RV again and had (the second) nightcap of the evening before I ended up back on my porch with Joel, then Jack, then Tommy for the (third) and final nightcap of the night. We talked about songwriting and the gig and how lucky we’ve been to have this great place to hang out for the weekend.
This morning I was up early, packing up my shit that was in complete disarray, working on the blog, and listening to last week’s Eddie Trunk shows. I took an outdoor shower that was amazing (and frankly, overdue) – hot water, cooler Florida morning air - and kept an eye on the property for any activity from my comrades. We’re about to have some breakfast and head south a bit. Tonight we’ve got an early show at The Backyard at Boca Fiesta & Palomino at 5pm and free I believe some come on out and show me how great Gainesville is! My first time in this city I’ve heard so much about over the years. xx
