Dayton, Ohio
The Wild Honey Collective crüe pulled up in front of my house around 2:15PM and we quickly loaded my gear into the van. I said goodbye to TrooperGirl22 and we headed south towards Ohio. Joel (aka Kernel) was at the wheel, I got shotgun, Tommy, Nicholas, Jack, and Adam Wild Honey were in the back. We listened to The Replacements, Cheap Trick and The Kinks before I called Tommy out that he was just greasing the skids before the onslaught of The Band and the Grateful Dead marathon, but they turned the radio over to me and I cranked Aerosmith – Draw the Line as we pulled into Dayton. Kernel had to hear some Guided By Voices so I played the only song on my iPod, “Cheyenne” for him as we passed under Needmore Avenue (IYKYK) and headed into the city.
We pulled into the Oregon District of Dayton around 5:30 and loaded in to the Oregon Express. It’s a cool bar I’ve been looking to play for many years now, with the band room off to the side of the main bar and a rooftop bar and green room that I never made it up to. We met Jared, the sound guy, who got us tuned in great in short time, and headed over to Blind Bob's for dinner. Blind Bob’s is a great joint I’ve played many times with The Tucos, and somehow always manage to stop in at for their great food, even when I’m not playing there. I was looking for my brother Tyler C But he wasn’t around. I had a killer southern-style fried chicken sandwich and headed back to the OE to kick things off while the rest of the band finished their dinners and cashed out.
Back at the OE I said hello to my old pal Art from the University of Dayton and Your Tuesday Afternoon Alternative, an always a welcome sight whenever I’m in town. I played a couple solo songs as the band filed back in from dinner and got their beers and stuff. Adam came up and joined me for a couple songs before Tommy, Jack, Nicholas, and Joel joined in for a rowdy set of my material. After an hour or so, I stepped off and they played a killer set of their stuff while I caught up with Dr J. There was a bit of a break then we all went back up and played a fun set of covers and originals before calling it a night around 11pm.
After another round or two we loaded out and headed east towards our AirBnB in Xenia, Ohio, stopping for gas just outside the Oregon District on the way. It was about a 20-minute drive, Kernel keeping it between the ditches as Glen Campbell sang about the Wichita Lineman and the Country Boy who’s got is feet in LA but his mind on Tennessee. Jack and I fumbled around in the dark and eventually found the right house with the right keypad on the right door and we were in. Bedrooms and floor-spots were claimed, nightcaps were had, and we incrementally crashed out.
Can’t say it was a great show in Dayton attendance-wise, but it was a great joint, friendly staff, and a fine warm-up for what’s ahead. Big thanks to everyone at the OE for being so cool to us.
This morning I’m nursing a mid-grade headache on the count of last-night's revelry and running on a solid 3 ½ hours sleep, so feeling my normal self pretty much, working on the blog while the Honey Collective dudes sleep. Tonight we’re off to the Cherry Street Tavern in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This will be my second show there after The Tucos played in 2022. We got Jack Endelouz and Vic Burgess on the bill so come on out Tennessee! xx
